Gettysburg Living History AAR

May 25-26, 2024

Dragoons,

After a few 11th-hour adjustments and coordinated efforts amongst the troops, Gettysburg NMP Living History was effectively implemented over Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26, 2024. Initially, seven of our unit members, along with two mounted and one dismounted troopers from the Liberty Rifles, were to be in attendance. However, for the weekend, the seven troopers from the 2nd US made up our total ranks.

Placing myself in the ranks as a trooper, Sergeant Barry Kruis ably led the demonstrations. We had some kinks to iron out on the first few demos, such as conducting an effective wheel on a saber charge, but discipline in the ranks came through, and we showed the efficiency of "moving as one."

The crowds got larger as the weekend progressed, and many visitors came into camp looking around and asking lots of great questions and of course, petting the horses.  We even got to talk to a gentleman who grew up all his life in Gettysburg and saw the 100th re-enactment of Gettysburg in 1963 as a boy.

Mentioned in this detachment is Sergeant Barry for his leadership on the field and being prepared for all the supplies needed for water for the horses (minus one hose).  Colonel Dave Mize for once again providing excellent narration and sometimes colorful commentary during our demonstrations.  Trooper Mark and myself for tag teaming meals during the weekend.  We both have a greater respect for Trooper Hank and all he does to cover meals for an entire weekend.  Trooper Amos (Amy) for dutifully assisting in preparing those meals.  Trooper Dave Childs for bringing a horse for Trooper Tony from the Czech Republic to ride - of which Dave, Tony, and I had a great trail ride through the battlefield, complete with an NPS LE Ranger escort along the way.  Last but not least, Trooper Harry, for coming out to ride as an outrider and not overdoing it too much on his knee.

As always, it was a pleasure riding with the 2nd on the field of honor at Gettysburg. Next up is Travelian Station June 7-9; the captain's Order will be sent out soon.

Your most humble and obedient servant,

Brad E. Thomas
